Gould was born Glen Gold in Toronto, Ontario, before his family changed their name to Gould in an attempt to avoid the anti-Semitism of the 1930s. His mother, whose grandfather was a cousin of Edvard Grieg, was his first piano teacher before he began attending the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at the age of ten. There he studied piano with Alberto Guerrero, organ with Frederick C. Silvester and theory with Leo Smith.

Yet, Freedom, yet, thy banner, torn but flying,
Streams like a thunder-storm against the wind.
