It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;--
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up, in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:--
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

Little thought of mine:
Annabel Lee is the last poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. It is addressed to his wife Virginia Clemm who he loved deeply throughout his life.Annabel Lee is the idealization of his wife. Reading through the poem, i was quite touched by the passing away of his beloved wife and moved by the melancholy of Poe after his wife's death. However, his belief in their everlasting love fascinates me most. Spontaneous overflow of natural feeling is in the truest sense, even though here the lady is purified, what i feel through this poem is beauty, melancholy and love. By repetition of their once happy life togwther, the cause of Annabel Lee's death and the lonely environment, etc, Poe's gloominess is quite successfully transplanted in my heart. I don't pay much attention in the language technique, however beautiful it is. A poem which expresses one's true and natural feeling can most touch my heart. I guess that is the reason I like poems of Romanticism all the way through. "neither the angels in Heaven above /nor the demons down under the sea /can ever dissever my soul form the soul /of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--" is my favorite quotation from Annabel Lee. What stong emotion it is contained in these words! |
