这首诗看来原文确实颇为费解。AMAZON的一位读者刚好提供了另两种英译文:Some of Gerber's translations seem to make more sense than Edmonds's did. Where Edmonds had "In the spear is my kneaded bread" Gerber has "On board ship I kneaded barley bread" (still rather an unlikely activity).
Some Saian takes pleasure in my shield, which beside a bush, the fine armour, threw I against my will. But I saved myself. What is to me that shield? Let it go. Soon I'll get no worse.
Our pain, full of groans, Perikles, no citizen will blame and delight in banquets and no city. For such were the men whom the wave of the murmuring sea overwhelmed, that full of grief our lungs have we both. But Gods indeed to hopeless wounds, my friend, mighty patience provided a relief. In different times different men the very same suffer. Yet now it's turned to us, and in bleeding hurt we groan. Soon some others' turn will come. Now you stand up at once, shaking off womanish mourning.
Oh Zeus, father Zeus, Yours is the Kingdom of Heaven, and you watch men's deeds, the crafty and the right, and You are who cares for beasts' transgression and justice.
